Whether to Buy or Rent Office Space
No matter what business you run there will come a time when you have to consider if renting or buying office space is a better option for you. While each type ofbusiness has different factors to consider in making their decision, there areseveral general t
Often, we feel that some things should come easily. Whenever we are thirsty, we expect cold water in the fridge. Whenever we're tired, we expect a cozy bed waiting for us at home. Whenever we need to go somewhere, we expect our car to take us there.
But sometimes, even the easiest things can run into trouble. Cold water can become stale. Cozy beds can be infested by ants and bedbugs. Cars can break down. And what should be a convenient process is made complicated and difficult.
Take the case of my brother when he was starting his forwarding business. He wanted service people who desired to ship items to Asian countries. He took care of the necessary documentations as well as other required investments. But he never prioritized office space. At that time, he believed that available office space can readily be found.
Soon, he discovered how wrong he was.
When he started looking for available office space in the downtown Los Angeles area, he was shocked to find out how difficult it was to find one. All the best spots were already taken, and most of them are reserved for years. The vacancies he encountered were in areas that weren't conducive for his business. The space sizes were too small to accommodate the items he would have to store. The addresses were quite confusing for anyone who would want to ship in the things they wish to forward overseas. And the communities where such vacancies are located don't really add prestige and credibility to his enterprise.
So, what happened to his startup venture?
Because he could not find an available office space suitable for his business' needs, he was forced to carry out the first two years of his operations from his residence. His house became a virtual warehouse. His kids would have to trek a jungle of boxes before they could reach the dining room. His wife had to place household items inside the cabinets to leave more space for the items the business would be forwarding.
There is, of course, a lesson to this tale.
Find an available office space as early as possible!
Don't leave such an integral aspect of your business to chance. Failing to find one may seem like a minor hitch, but it could surely cost you some opportunities that your enterprise could otherwise capitalize on.
My brother learned this lesson. Hence, when he found the perfect office space, he didn't settle on renting the same. He bought it and firmly established his business in its grounds.
